Castability

Suitability of a liquid casting material for production of cast parts with the assessment of castability being generally based on the fluidity and mold-filling property, solidification and shrinkage behavior (s. Solidification shrinkage, Shrinkage) of the material, as well as its tendency for metal/molding material reactions.

For non-ferrous materials, parameters such as tendency for oxidation and foam development, as well as warm cracking (hot cracking) may be used for assessment.

In any case, castability largely depends on the respective alloy (hypoeutectic or hypereutectic), the casting temperature, the molding process and casting process, wall thickness and the like.

Eutectic alloys (see Eutectic) and pure metals provide the best castability properties since these materials undergo solidification at consistent temperatures and do not provide solidification intervals.
