Cooling line

The cooling line is part of an automated or mechanized molding system which is installed downstream of the casting line and extends up to the shake-out grid and/or cools the castings between the casting process and further processing steps to a target temperature as a cooling transport system.

Usually, molds which have just been filled and are still hot are cooled at the cooling line until demolding is possible. Many cooling lines are equipped with extractor hoods or a cooling tunnel for blowing in cooling air. Fig. 1 shows an example of a completely encased cooling transport system in which the discharged sand is collected in trays and emptied centrally (technical data in Table 1). Here, the hot castings are placed on canted sheet metal trays (Fig. 2) and conveyed to the upper level by means of a lifting device. The castings then pass through the system level by level from top to bottom, while cooling down either due to ambient air or aided by forced cooling.

Cooling lines and cooling tunnels can also be installed between the shake-out grid and the frettling station if the castings freed from mold sand and shaken out still require cooling; in this case, a rod conveyor system (Fig. 3) or tray conveyor system or a belt or vibrating conveyor can be used to transport the castings, while they are cooled by blown-in cooling air (usually) to temperatures of less than 100°C when passing the cooling tunnel at the line.
