Degree of normality

Quality characteristics for GJL which, according to Eq. 1, is the relation of the achieved tensile strength (proven with a 30mm standard test bar) and the tensile strength calculated from the degree of saturation Sc:

Eq. 1:

A low degree of normality is a sign that the metallurgic possibilities have not been used entirely for the production conditions. The goal from a metallurgic point of view is to achieve a high degree of normality since this correlates with low relative hardness (q. v.) and thus allows for good processing for standard pearlitic flake graphite cast iron.
