Digital filter

Mathematical operation which is used on images (in image analysis) or data sets
(s. Computed tomography) in order to highlight certain properties.

This includes the Gaussian filter or median filter for smoothing but also the Sobel or Laplacian filter in order to highlight edges. It is important to consider here that when highlighting one property, the quality of other properties of the image may also be decreased.
