Furfuryl alcohol

Chemical compound from the group of alcohols and substituted oxygen heterocycles. Furfuryl alcohol is derived from furan and differs from the latter by an additional hydroxymethyl group.

It forms on disproportionation of furfural and is a colorless to yellow liquid which is readily soluble in organic solvents (ethanol, benzene) but insoluble in kerosene. The compound is reactive in many ways.

Furfuryl alcohol is used as a solvent and for the production of furan resins and, more recently, for chemical wood modification.
