The basis of strength increase through grain refinement; it has been proved by experiments for a large number of materials. The dependence of yield strength on grain size is governed by the so-called Hall-Petch relationship:
 

σ_O = starting stress for dislocation movement; K = grain boundary resistance; d_K = mean grain diameter

These are constants depending on the material and testing conditions.
