Hysteresis

The difference occurring in opposite directions when a physical process is performed.

For example, the temperature for a phase transition in a specific material is different, depending on whether it is measured during heat up or during cooling. A typical example for hysteresis curves are magnetic materials (s. Permanent magnet).
