Mold cavity pressure sensor

A cavity sensor for the use in die casting which is attached to the die casting mold and records the pressure/time progress from mold filling and solidification to the extraction.

The mold cavity pressure sensor (FIDS) is designed to measure the metal stress in specific areas and for this purpose determines important information on the castingsolidification state during the entre die casting cycle. This is especially important for the selection of the right connection time and the length of the hold period. The mold cavity pressure sensor signal can also be used for determining the correct starting time delay and the entry speed of a local squeeze pin.

The sensor consists of a high temperature quartz sensor which was especially developed for this application. The FIDS is a construction without membranes and installed in a robust adapter (Fig. 1). On its smooth and elaborated front, the sensor has a diameter of 8mm, it is flush with the adapter front thanks to an annular clearance of

During filling and solidification, there is a characteristic pressure/time progress (Fig. 2) where the decreasing cavity pressure indicates at what time the gate and/or the part solidified. The melt temperature at the front may exceed 700 °Cm a mold cavity pressure of up to 2,000 bar can be measured. All sensor parts are resistant to corrosion. The high temperature cable protected by a steel mesh is connected with the sensor and complies with protection type IP65. The Fischer connector is self-locking and impermeable to splash water.
