Sand reclamation

Cleaning of used sand by removing the adhesive binder coatings.

The two main purposes of sand reclamation are:

  • Cleaning of the mold material grain to remove binders which still adhere to it following the thermal load or are firmly affixed to the grain due to this load and removal of powdered components, i.e. separation of the reclaimed molding base material.

  • The actual reclamation consists of a peeling or impact process which removes all adhesions from the sand grain to the best possible extent. For this purpose, the used mono or mixed sand is prepared in various process combinations. Following the reclamation process, the sand grain is separated.

Generally, a differentiation is made between mechanic reclamation (cold reclamation), thermal reclamation (hot reclamation) and wet reclamation.

Already during the reclamation process, the removal of dusts must be ensured as otherwise these act as lubricants thus having a negative impact on the efficiency of the reclamation and the quality of the reclaimed material (see Dedusting).

Fig. 1 gives an overview of the necessary process steps in the various reclamation processes which have to be adjusted to the relevant mold material system. Fig. 2 (Küttner GmbH) shows a Knock-out station for large molding boxes and sand regeneration.

Renown companies supplying reclamation systems are GUT GmbH Freudenberg, Webac - Gesellschaft für Maschinenbau mbH Euskirchen, Küttner GmbH & Co. KG, KLEIN Anlagenbau AG as well as AAGM Aalener Gießereimaschinen GmbH Bopfingen.
