Calcination

Chemical and technical production process, in which the starting material is heated up to release any volatile components (contaminations).

The raw material is not heated up to its melting point. With the calcination process it is possible to produce lime from limestone, cement, magnesia, corundum, or alumina, for example. The process mostly takes place in rotary furnaces.
