Order

According to EN 1559-1:1997 (Founding – Technical conditions of delivery - Part 1: General), the purchaser of castings is to give clear information (see also Order check list) already in the enquiry and order, namely:

Mandatory information

  • Number of castings to be supplied (incl. the permissible deviations from this number and information on the delivery schedule)
  • Specification of the casting material, if the casting material is standardized, then
  • The number of the relevant material standard
  • The designation of the casting material either by symbol or by number
  • Relevant drawings, standards and technical specifications (see note below)
  • Supply of pattern equipment, core boxes and gravity dies, permanent die casting molds
  • Requirements regarding the outer and inner condition of the casting

Optional information When applicable, enquiries and orders should include further requirements, such as:

  • Relevant wall thickness of the casting
  • As-delivered condition (e.g. information on heat treatment, surface treatment, etc.)
  • Additional properties not specified in the material standard
  • Mass of the casting (see note below)
  • Delivery of preliminary samples, delivery of initial samples
  • Method and extent (area and/or frequency) of non-destructive testing
  • Method and extent (area and/or frequency) of machining to be carried out by the manufacturer
  • Surface areas for further operations by the purchaser (this includes welding operations, local surface treatments, etc.)
  • Type and extent (area and/or frequency) of special tests, incl. the conditions applicable to such tests
  • Special measures to be taken or specifications to be observed in the manufacture and testing of castings, particularly with regard to the testing of production welds, in cases where castings are partly or completely subject to special stress conditions
  • Requirements regarding traceability
  • Criteria for statistical sampling
  • Type of documents covering the tests performed (see Inspection document)
  • Type of surface protection and packing for storage and transport
  • Repairs and storage arrangements for patterns and tools
  • Composition of the batch, unless defined in the material specification
  • Agreements on production welding
  • Any other special requirements, e.g. structure, corrosion resistance, machinability, etc.
  • Application of a quality assurance system given in EN ISO 9001, 9002 or 9003

Note:
information on drawings, patterns and tools The purchaser must provide the manufacturer with the necessary drawings of the as-cast casting and/or the finished machined casting. The identification of the relevant drawings is to be specified in the enquiry and order (note: unless otherwise agreed and applicable, drawings, patterns and tools are to conform to international or national standards). If modifications to the purchaser’s drawings are necessary (due to casting-related measures and conditions), they must be agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser. When applicable, the surfaces to be machined, the required machining allowances and datums (ISO 5449) for machining and for the dimensional check are to be specified on the drawings. If the purchaser makes patterns, gravity dies or tools available to the manufacturer, their identification needs to be specified in the order. The surfaces of the casting to be machined are to be clearly identified and indicated on the drawing. The manufacturer of the casting needs to check whether the pattern is usable and complete.

For general tolerances and machining allowances, ISO 8062 applies, unless agreed otherwise. The casting tolerance grade and the machining allowances are to be specified on the drawing or in the order.

Note:
information on the mass If there is a tolerance on the mass for castings, an agreement must be reached as to whether the mass of the casting is to be the same as the mass calculated from the drawing or the mass of an initial sample with sizes within the size tolerances. When the mass is calculated from the drawing, then any modifications to the mold and/or the casting process and all machining allowances must be taken into account.
